EdgarI thought this was a tough question to answer in 60 seconds but you have broken it down to the basics. Well done.

I most say that when I first heard it during the debate, I had to clear my throat and loosen my tie - "tough crowd".

Thanks for answering it here for us.

DanYou're welcome. This debate was over by the time I got home from work, but the fact that a candidate has only 60 seconds to answer is just silly. I don't see how the standard debate format helps inform the electorate. The Gingrich v. Cuomo Cooper Union debate format would be much more helpful.

BobThis is ridiculous, this man's idea of history is just plan bunk. It was Biblical abolitionists who fought for the end of slavery, yes there were men on the pro-slavery side pointing to the Bible but the point is he is only looking at half the picture. Likewise with the women's sufferage movement it was women with a Bible in hand that stood up. I just think that this talk from this minister is out of ignorence and if he is going to be consistent with his position he never should have put his video on youtube.

I think you did a great job answering these objections Dan. I think that everybody is "religious" so what does he mean by get religion out of the discussions in the areas of public policy (he just wants Bible believing Christians to be silenced really) liberals like himself don't have a message so silence on dogmas is fine for him.

Also the point about "gay rights" can't be stressed enough. This gay marriage junk isn't a civil rights issue, as you pointed out they have the same rights as me, I can't marry a man either.

John Kaiser"The questioner claims that most Americans agree it was wrong and unconstitutional to use religion to support slavery and segregation..."

Ridiculous. I hope these folks aren't oblivious to the fact that Christianity also (to a much greater extent) served as the basis for the abolitionist movement. While pro-slavery writers adopted biblical justifications for their abominable actions- this was an after thought to justify an existing condition. Whereas, the influence of Christianity in the abolition movement was ever present and always created the foundation for the movement.

Without Christianity the abolition movement would have been either infinitesimal or non-existent. Without Christianity the South's peculiar institution would have continued exist and other excuse would have sufficed.
