Pink Floyd and their HOPING foundation support - a bad idea?
By Edgar on Aug 17, 2010 | 2030 viewsI really liked Pink Floyd (noticed the past tense) until the recent news of their 'get back together' concert came online: On July 10th, David and Roger came together for a benefit concert on behalf of the Hoping Foundation.
What was this all about?
HOPING stands for Hope and Optimism for Palestinians in the Next Generation -- helping young Palestinian refugees by providing children the rare opportunity to play and express themselves through art, photography, film, music, theatre, dance and sport (oh oh, does this sound like a westernized curriculum?) I hope no one complains about that later on..
And why do the Young Palestinians need help?
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced to leave their homes in 1948 when Israel was created, and again in 1967 during the six day war. At first families lived in tents; they did not plan to stay long, expecting to be able to return to their homes, towns, farms and villages. Today they are still living in the same refugee camps waiting for a solution to the conflict, their lives on hold, caught in terrible circumstances (HOPING foundation).
Now what really bothered me about the text above is the bit about the "Israeli Occupation" - how about the other bad guys on the Palestine side? Or could it be that Israel is the only bad guy? Why is there no mention of the other guys?
Gilmour and Waters have the right idea - real change needs to come from the heart of children. Kudos for that. However, by omitting references to terrorist organizations (Isreal's excuse for all of its "security restrictions"), HOPING is preventing real change.
Using language such as "when Israel was created" perpetuates the sentiment that Palestine was wronged. Let's face it people. Wars are fought and lands lost and won. England, Spain, Portugal, China, Japan, Russia, the Aztecs and Mayans - they all fought wars. Unfortunately, someone had to lose. People conquered lands; other lost them. People killed and raped and pillaged. That's horrible of course. But it would be wrong for any one country to now come to the UN and say: "oh you know what? That piece of land over there used to be ours. We want it back!"
Perpetuating a "victim worldview" hurts peace.
