Evil exists, with or without one, (or many).
As Steven Weinberg says, "With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion."
As for the first cause, hit the link to see what Stephen Hawking thinks...

Weinberg's little bit has a intriguing ring to it.
As you know, we believe that there is no one that is Good. Not even one. So we're just evil and doing evil things is easy for us. God keeps us from that urge -

I'm assuming that you don't have to believe in him, because I manage not to do evil things, but evil things are done by human beings, so why didn't God stop their urges?
