December 4th, 2009 by E. I. Sanchez || Leave a comment »I must say that the following makes me so jealous. Nostalgic. I wish I could borrow more time to see all of these goals and dreams come alive. Reverse-Engineering the Brain sounds so exciting!!!
In a speech to engineers about taking pride in [their] profession, [Robert W. Lucky] mentioned two lists of engineering achievements put together by the National Academy of Engineering. The older list ranks the 20 greatest engineering achievements of the last century. The newer list consists of 14 grand challenges to be accomplished by engineers in the present century (ieee.org).

December 1st, 2009 by E. I. Sanchez || 3 comments »Over the Thanksgiving holiday last week, my family and I drove from Chicago to New York City. While there, we visited the American Museum of Natural History (which you might remember from such films as "Night at the Museum") and it seemed to me that evolution was being taught as fact through out the exhibits. No complaints there.
All was well when suddenly --- we entered one particular section where I got the impression the museum wing donor or sponsor might have been a creationist.

I would totally love to have Prof. Coyne debate Stephen C. Meyer (from the Discovery Institute) and hear what Meyer has to say about Coyne's observations on evolutionary theory.

60 Minutes distastefully disdains Noah's Story
November 15th, 2009 by E. I. Sanchez || 5 comments »While waiting for the Amazing Race (the wife is a big fan), I caught 60 Minutes': Iraq's Marshlands: Resurrecting Eden.

The story started with great shots of the valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the marshlands that beautifully decorate the landscape.
The story continued and CBS dazzled me with more HD video and I listened carefully as I was re-fed the urban legend that the Tigris and Euphrates valley was the cradle of civilization where agriculture, the alphabet and the wheel were invented. Yeah, yeah, yeah...
